The goal of the career component is to introduce students to college entrance requirements, explore vocational options and promote personal growth.

 

The career counselor asseses the career and personal growth needs of each student. Students are given career assignments to help them explore the world of work and obtain information on topics of interest.

Assessments available to the student include the COPS Comprehensive Career Guidance System, ACT PLAN, Self Directed Search and the Strong Interest Inventory. Students receive an understanding of their occupational interest, personality themes and self evaluations of work values, skills and abilities. Assessments are followed-up with an explanation of results and assignments to supplement the inventories.

Services to students in their senior year include assistance in researching various colleges, registration for college entrance exams, college applications assistance, financial aid and scholarship assistance.

 

 

The Career Summer Component is packed with fun, self-exploration and learning. Students are placed in a career class where they develop an Awareness of Self, Awareness of Occupations, Awareness of Career Goals and Develop a Life Plan.

Seniors are offered a Job Seeking Skills class. Here students learn where to look for work, how to accurately complete an application, develop a resume and interview techniques. Students also complete a videotape interview.

Speakers from the campus community and the community at large share their work, educational and personal experience with the students. Speakers serve as inspirational role models to the students. Topics are on areas of interest to youth and various occupations.

Job site visits allow the students to visit employers and get an up close and personal view of various occupations entail. Students are able to speak with employers and employees about the daily operation of businesses and what it takes to prepare oneself for the industry.

Group dynamics allow the students to work with team leaders in small groups for discussions, self exploration and team building. Cooperative games is the forum used to build student's self esteem and develop effective communication skills.

Staff is available to provide any additional services as requested by the students. The student/Staff ratio is conducive to providing individualized services to each student.
