The English remediation requirement must be completed within your first year at Fresno State.

 

You can complete your remediation requirement by successfully completing either English 5A, English 10, or Linguistics 6.

 

If you scored below 147 on your EPT and below a 135 on the reading portion, it is recommended that you take Linguistics 40T.

ENGLISH WRITING REQUIREMENT

Directed Self Placement Program (DSP)

Fresno State students who have not met the General Education requirement in English composition have the opportunity to choose which freshman writing course is right for them.  Check out the English Department’s web site for more information:  (http://www.csufresno.edu/english/programs/devents.htm). 

The DSP Program offers three options to you after you have taken (or are exempted from) the English Placement Test.  To help you select the proper classes, read the information and then select OPTION 1, OPTION 2, or OPTION 3 below.

Option 3

English Strategies for Multilingual Speakers

 

I spoke a language besides English when growing up, OR a language other than English is used in my home. AND, I am fluent in spoken English but it takes me a long time to read and write in English.

· I often lose the meaning when I read because I get stuck on words I don't understand.

· I want to develop my vocabulary for college-level English.

· I need to learn to paraphrase and summarize ideas before I can respond to them in writing.

· I prefer to take an extra semester to work on my English before taking English 5A/5B.

(3 units)

 

Must earn “C” or higher in English 5B to receive G.E. credit.

Stretch Composition

 

· I think of myself as an average reader 

   and writer.

· I feel reading can be boring and hard

   and I don’t really do much other than

   just read and put it away.

· I have trouble coming up with good

   topics and ideas for my essays.

· I could use some brushing up on

   grammar and punctuation.

· I would prefer to get more practice and

   help from my instructor as I learn to

   write college-level assignments.

NOTES

1.  English Placement Test (EPT):  The EPT is designed to assess the level of reading and writing skills of

     entering undergraduate students.  You must complete the English Placement Test prior to registration for

     classes unless you meet an exemption.  See page 79 of the 2006-2007 General Catalog for specifics. 

2.  Advanced Placement Exemptions:  A score of 3, 4, or 5 on either the Language and Composition or
     the Literature and Composition Advanced Placement exam satisfies both EPT and English 10.

3.  After Completion of 60 units:  Students must fulfill the Upper Division Writing Skills requirement by

     completing a “W” course with a grade of "C" or higher, or by passing the Upper Division Writing Exam

     (UDWE). See your faculty advisor/academic counselor for details.

4.  International Students:  Consult with the International Students Services and Programs (ISSP) office

     for further information about additional English language testing and placement.
